How to Create a Credit Code

Learn how to credit a credit code directly in the portal to reward your users with fixed loyalty points or dollar credits.

Credit codes are codes you set up for your customers to enter into the account section of the app under “Credit Code”. To set up a Promo Code to be redeemed as part of an offer during the checkout process, check out the related articles section at the bottom.

Prerequisites

  • Access to the Merchant Portal
  • Admin or Marketing Admin level permissions

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Log into the Merchant Portal

  1. Go to the Merchant Portal
  2. Enter your credentials and click Login

Step 2: Navigate to Credit Codes

  1. Go to the left-hand side of the Smooth Merchant Portal
  2. Select Engagement
  3. Click on Credit Codes

Step 3: Create a New Credit Code

  1. Click the Create Credit Code button in the top right corner
  2. Default status is Active
    • Toggle off to make it Inactive if needed
  3. Input a name for the credit code (e.g., Holiday 2026)
  4. Enter unique credit code
    • Input the actual credit code that customers will enter
    • Ensure it is unique and not previously used
  5. Enter the credit code description
    • Describe the offer (e.g., Enter in code and receive 100 points)
  6. Choose type of credit. Select between:
  • Fixed Dollar Credit: Enter the dollar amount in the reward amount field
  • Fixed Loyalty Credit: Enter the points amount in the reward amount field
  1. Set redemption limits:
    • Decide if redemptions are Unlimited or limited to a specific number
    • Note: Unlimited means multiple customers can use the code, not that one customer can use it multiple times
  2. Specify Locations
    • For loyalty credits, the code applies to all locations
    • For dollar credits, select specific locations if desired
  3.  Set Time Frame for Code Validity
    • Choose a start and end date for the code
    • Dates are based on UTC time zone
  4.  Decide on if you want to segment access to the credit code
    • Decide if the code is for all users or specific segments
    • If not for all users, toggle off all users to select the segment or individual customers

Step 4: Save Your Credit Code

  1. Review your selections
  2. Click Save

Best Practices / Notes

  • If the credit code is set to Inactive, it will not activate automatically on the start date. Keep it Active and it will only be able to be used once the start date takes effect. There is no need to make it inactive if you have an end date, as it will no longer be able to be used once the end date has passed.
